DOES DREAM HOLD CLUE TO CURE?
Twenty years ago I had a dream after visiting my mother who was dying of cancer. I was walking along a bank on a pebbly road and on my left were low white stone buildings. I realised I was in a foreign country and the name Sarawak came to mind. Next, I met a dark haired woman dressed in white and stood at a table.
“How can I protect my mother from the invaders?” I asked.
There was a clap of thunder and the woman said: “Put a flat cake on top of her bed and the invaders will not harm her.”
I awoke puzzled by the dream but guessed the ‘invaders’ referred to my mother’s cancer. Perhaps the thunder referred to electricity and the bread referred to a yeast of some kind. Unfortunately, my mother died but later I decided to get to the bottom of this strange dream. It turns our that there is a place in Borneo called Sarawak. The natives there eat an unusual red nut. I wrote to a leading anthropologist who told me that in Sarawak there is a remarkably low incidence of cancer.

The Periodic Table, the Benzene Ring, the orbit of electrons and even the invention of the sewing machine were all revealed to scientists through dreams. The first Hippocratic oath from ancient Greece said that the dreams of patients revealed the causes and cures of illnesses. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if an expert read this column and as a result found a cure for cancer?
