At brain death we shed the physical body as we would a suit of clothes and progress to the spirit world in our astral body. This is a temporary form and is made of a material that is on a higher vibration to gross matter. As we progress we shed this etheric sheath and enter into the realms of pure spirit which is indescribable in earthly terms, the closest metaphor for this state is that it is a 'world of light'.
At the point of death some people are aware of the material world but most fall into the 'tunnel of light' that is often described by people who have come back from the brink of death. NDE cases usually describe reaching a demarcation point, (sometimes symbolised by a fence, pearly gates or a stairway) -cross this threshold and there's no returning to the physical body. We are then greeted by those we love who have gone before us and we become aware of God who appears to us in the form we are most familiar with. An atheist or Buddhist may experience God as a light, a Hindu may see Krishna, a Moslem may see Mohammed or the light of Allah and a Christian may see the form of Jesus.
