Meaning of Ouroboros Symbol
Dragons
Salamanders and
Ouroboros
Why
do you use a Dragon / Salamander as one of the logos for
the website?
DRAGONS &
SALAMANDERS:
Exact question
about the Dragon Salamander from the message boards:
"Do you
understand the underlying connotation of that symbol within
our societies?
Do you know
it is representative of secret occult societies? and the
corruptive nature of the way society in general is keep
away from the truth about our world and about spiritual
facts??
Obviously,
if you only have the knowledge of the circle and serpent
in a spiritual sense, and that is why you have displayed
it here, then you will dismiss me as a crank, but I suggest
perhaps you read more into the Earth symbolics related to
this serpent/dragon."
I am only really
concerned about the symbol from a Spiritual point of view.
Secret societies and other organisations have misused many
archetypal symbols. The swastika is a good example.
The dragon is
taken from Alchemical symbolism. Although some Christians
class Alchemy as occult it is - according to Carl Jung and
others- a system for spiritual transformation. The dragon
eating its tail is a Archetypal symbol.
The dragon/salamander
from Alchemy is a similar symbol to the phoenix which is
born out of the ashes of despair- just as spirituality
often appears out of adversity. The dragon eats its own
tail yet continues to regenerate. This is a symbol for time.
However the circle that the dragon forms is a mandala image-
representing the totality of the self. You may call this
enlightenment or God perhaps.
The "tail-devourer"
is the symbolisation of concepts such as completion, perfection
and totality, the endless round of existence, etc. It is
usually represented as a worm or serpent with its tail in
its mouth. Sometimes it is called the world snake, Ouroboros.
By swallowing its own tail it expresses the essence of Gnostic
esotericism. It is both an amulet against suffering and
a representation of the cosmos, "the circle of eternal
becoming," often seen with the words "One is the
All."
So I did think
a lot about this symbol when I chose it for one of the site
logos.
The Salamander,
According to Paracelsus
From Paracelsus' Auslegung von 30 magischen
Figuren
The Egyptians,
Chaldeans, and Persians often mistook the salamanders for
gods, because of their radiant splendour and great power.
The Greeks, following the example of earlier nations, deified
the fire spirits and in their honour kept incense and altar
fires burning perpetually.

Many thanks for
your comments. Instead of Ouroboros I prefer to call the
'dragon' Our Boris!
