As I see it there are two sorts of animals: those that have an individual consciousness and those that are part of a group consciousness. Pets, for example, develop a greater sense of identity because of their contact with humans. Although most of their behaviour is instinctive they also appear to gain a certain degree of self-awareness. They may have also experienced love.
I believe that these influences help form an individual soul that retains its sense of identity after death. I am reminded of one lady who came for a mediumistic consultation: "Don't tell me anything about the humans over there" she said "I only want to know about my cats." I was able to give her the names of all eight of her cats and character traits that each had. Although I believe I had her 'dead' father helping me it proved to me that some animals survive death and, like us, retain their characteristics beyond the grave.
I also believe, although I have no empirical proof of this, that most animals merge into the collective consciousness of their species after death.
