Halloween

Halloween is a pagan festival held on the evening of 31st October, when the spirits of the dead are supposed to return to haunt their former homes. Witches and demons are believed to roam the world of the living on this dreaded night. Halloween was the last day of the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon year. Many Halloween costumes and games have their origin in these ancient pagan ceremonies.

Halloween celebrations are held on the evening before All Saints' Day. This is a Christian Feast that honours and remembers all Christian saints, known and unknown. The word Halloween itself has its origins in a corruption of All Hallows Eve which falls on November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"),

In America, Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31, usually by children dressing in Halloween Costumes and masks. They go door-to-door collecting sweets. It is celebrated mainly in the United States, Ireland, Scotland and Canada but has in recent years become a fun celebration in the UK.

History of Halloween
What is the origin of Halloween?

The Celts believed that on Halloween - at the end of their year - the laws of space and time were temporarily suspended. This enabled the spirit world to intermingle with the living. They believed that there was a danger that people could be possessed by the spirits of the dead. Villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable to spirits and prevent potential hauntings and possession. They would wear Halloween Costumes and dress in ghoulish costumes and make a lot of noise to frighten away the disembodied spirits.

The Romans adopted and assimilated the Celtic Halloween practices and the traditions continues until the present day. The tradition was taken to America by Irish and Scottish immigrants.
