What
is ALCHEMY?
Of
all the ancient 'occult' sciences, alchemy seems by far the most irrelevant,
since it is based upon a proposition now known to be false- that 'base
elements' can be changed into gold purely by chemical reactions. Alchemy is called the "hermetic art", a secret or occult practice names
after the founder of alchemy, Hermes Trismegistus. (The "thrice-greatest
Hermes.")
The psychologist
Carl Jung recognised that Alchemy is a symbolic system for the
transformation of the human spirit from its lead like state of ignorance
into the gold of enlightenment. Jung was the first to make alchemy
psychologically accessible to the 20th century by showing how alchemical
symbols were similar to archetypal dream images.
Jung recognised
that the alchemical work parallels the individuation process. Originally,
alchemy was an ancient tradition of sacred chemistry used to discern
the spiritual and temporal nature of reality, its structure, laws, and
functions. Today Alchemy can be used as a system of symbols to
help us with our spiritual progress.
Other
Alchemical terms:
Prima Materia the original
material that contains the elements of sol and luna or sulphur and mercury.
These are mixed with 'secret fire' and heated in a sealed vessel.
Nigredo When two elements are 'married'. (Symbol for the 'dark
night of the soul')
Albedo When the alchemist's substance turns white.
Green Lion When the alchemist's substance turns Green
Philosopher's Stone When the alchemist's substance turns red. This
'Lapis' which would turn base metals into gold, Jung considered to be
a symbol of the Self. He agreed with the 16th century master alchemist,
Gerhard Dorn, who said, "Transform yourselves into living Philosophical
Stones!"
