Spiritual Dreams and Bible Prophecy

If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision, I speak with him in a dream
Numbers 12:6

The Bible contains over fifty references to dreams. One of the earliest and most well-know is Jacob’s dream of a ladder from Earth to Heaven that he had during his journey to Haran. In the dream God promised Jacob that all the families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob He would return him to the Promised Land. The dream is fulfilled.

Paranormal BookDreams caused great trouble for Joseph and his brothers. ‘Here comes the dreamer,' say the brothers. 'Let us slay him, and then let us see what will become of his dreams!' (Gen 32:19)  Joseph is thrown into a pit and eventually sold to traders, who bring him to Egypt. But Joseph’s understanding of prophetic dreams also brought him good fortune as well. His interpretation of the pharaoh's led to his appointment as Viceroy of Egypt, and to the saving of his family from famine.

It was a dream that foretold to Abraham of his people’s slavery in Egypt and eventual Exodus: "A deep slumber descended upon Abraham and a horror of a great darkness enveloped him... your seed will be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them...."(Gen 15:12-13). The covenant between God, Abraham, and the people of Israel was revealed in association with this dream. Similarly, Mohammed received much of the text of the Koran from a dream he had and would often interpret the dreams of his disciples'.

The dream of Nebuchadnezzer the King of Babylon as described in the book of Daniel is also considered an important Biblical dream. Nebuchadnezzer dreamed of a tree being felled and that he were left out to graze like a beast.  Daniel explained that this dream was to teach him to acknowledge the heavenly power above him in the same way as he was above the beasts in the field.  The dream was, as it turned out, thought to be prophetic. Nebuchadnezzer eventually went insane and his son Belshazzar assumed the throne. During a feast given by Belshazzar Daniel saw God's hand writing a message of judgment on the palace wall. He interpreted the writing to the king, "Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." (Daniele 5:25-30). That very night, the Medo-Persian army captured Babylon and killed Belshazzar, and King Darius became ruler.

Many Christians taught that God might reveal himself through dreams. St. John Chrysostom who said that we are not responsible for our dreams, and should be ashamed of what we dream or any images that appear in them. Similarly, dreams changed the lives of St. Augustine and St. Jerome. In time dreams fell out of fashion and in particular Martin Luther, the founder of Protestantism, believed that dreams were the work of the Devil. Luther said that sin was, "the confederate and father of foul dreams."  Since the church interpreted God's word, revelations made to individuals in dreams could only come from the devil.

Spiritual Insights

Signs, Stories, Experiments and Symbols:

The Psychologist Carl Jung has made some interesting observations about religion and dreams. He believed that religious experiences are found in the human psyche and not in the supernatural. In particular he took an interest in Gnosticism and claimed that the Gnostics were akin to psychologists. One Gnostic idea that he explained in his psychology is that Christ is the symbolic representation of the self. He may be compared to other Mythic Gods who die young and are born again. He also causes a lot of upset amongst Christians by claiming that the Trinity is a symbol for psychological processes. The Father symbolizes the psyche in its original undifferentiated wholeness. The Son represents the human psyche and the Holy Spirit the state of self-critical submission to a higher reality.

Spiritual Symbols

Religious and Spiritual symbols may appear in a dream when you are undergoing some form of spiritual inner transformation. Religious figures may represent your higher self guiding you to self-realisation. Similarly holy buildings may symbolise the spiritual aspects of your nature.

In the past people used bibliomancy interpret a dream’s spiritual prophecy. On awakening the person would open the bible at random, close their eyes and point to a line of text with their finger. This was then interpreted as the interpretation of the dream and it’s prophecy. Religious symbols also appear in the dream prophecies of the superstitious. The writers of these superstition dream books were probably persecuted for their beliefs for most religious dreams are bad omens! Here are a few amusing examples:

Abbey: If it is in ruins then so will be your plans. For a woman it may foretell an illness.
Abbess: If she is smiling, true friends will surround you. But for a woman to dream of an abbess shows that she will be “compelled to perform distasteful tasks” The mind boggles!
Abbot: Plots will lead to your downfall.
Adam and Eve: You will be robbed of your success.

Nun: For a man it means material joys but for a woman this dream bodes discontentment.
